Please take time to comment of the following prompt related to 1984:

What is the role of the police?

  1. The dictionary definition of a policeman is someone who maintains order, prevents and detects crime, and enforces the laws. Police are around to protect and serve the people, and knowing that allows people to sleep easier at night. But when some people become corrupted by their authority, they can manipulate their power, and their "role" to justify an unlawful thing. The population has to trust that every single policeman takes his or her "role" seriously and have faith that the justice system will always right the wrongs.

  2. The role of the police is to protect and serve the citizens. Not only do they provide actual protection, but they also provide people with a sense of security. Knowing that there is an authoritative figure to go to in a time of need or danger allows people to live more freely. Also, having the police is likely to lessen acts of crime. If people know there will be consequence to their actions and crimes, they will be less likely to commit them.

  3. The police are an important player in society the role they play can be distorted in some peoples eyes, but they are around for major reasons like security for the common citizen against abuse, thievery, and any common law breaker, also the fight against injustice. The polices role is a helpful and righteous one, though there are the odd corrupted policemen you can believe that most police are proven to uphold the law believe in their motto "To Serve and Protect "

  4. I agree with Tasha. We have police to protect our cities and to give us a sense security. Without the police there would be more crime and the citizens would feel unsafe in there own homes. Police keep order and enforce the law to ensure that there is less crime. We rely on them to help us and protect us when needed. Crime rates are lower because the fear of being caught in the act and the consequences that come with it.

  5. I agree with Bogey on this topic, police are out there to protect the citizens and uphold laws to put the criminals behind bars. Some police can get corrupt with the power they have. For example a friend of mine (ROB) got a ticket for moving a truck that didn't have an N on the back of it across the street. In my opinion that is just taking your power to far. In conclusion the role of the police is to in Bogey's words "Serve & Protect."

  6. i also agree with Tasha , The primary role of the police is to enfource the law, but the ways they go about doing so are sometimes unjust, although nesesary; we may feel our righs have been abused. However, it is for the better of the society. Police are entitled to any information they may need for further investigation, but must also keep one informed of any inturuption.but most of all, law enfourcement are there to keep citizens safe and by doing so we have the freedom to walk the streets with out the fear of constent crime.

  8. The Police are there to help keep citizens safe by keeping things in order preventing and stopping crimes and makes sure laws are being followed. This makes for a safer community and environment to live in. I also agree with Tasha, that with Police around, there would be more crimes, and the world would be a very unkind place. However I also agree with Janine, sometimes power can be abused and manipulated, making the police seem like the bad guys. Mostly police are there to make this world a better place, and a friendlier place. Helping people live their lives feelings safe and happy

  9. The role of the police is to serve the community and by protect all people against any illegal acts, and to respect and protect human pride and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons. There are consequences and punishments for inappropriate behavior, with this being said the crimes are kept to a minimal. Without the police there would be chaos. Their jobs are to prevent and detect crime, and maintain of public order. If people feel unsafe or threaten, the police will come to your aid.

  10. If you all have such positive things to say about the police, then ours must, in your minds, be doing a good job. Certainly, they have a difficult job. How do our police act to gain our support? What could they do if they err and lose it? The news gives us conflicting views of the police: one day we hear of a member in Kelowna kicking a compliant arrest suspect in the head, and the next we hear of two members in the Prairies being killed while trying to stop a dangerous fugitive. I have two good friends who serve in the RCMP and one (with a distinguished twenty-year career) is leaving the Force because he has become disillusioned with it. What would you say to someone like that? What should we do for those in our society who "put themselves out there" for us? I wonder how we might respond to this inquiry if we lived in Mexico.

  11. Mr. Marshall, I don't think we're saying whether or not we think the police are doing a great job, we are just defining the "role" of the police. We each have opinions on what they are there to do, but IF they do it, is a completely different topic.

  12. What exactly do you mean by "disillusioned"? Is he disillusioned with his views on how police men are so post to act or disillusioned with how police men are now being portrayed to the society? Or does he feels he's not appreciated anymore? But yes if we lived in Mexico our views on the police would be completely different.

  14. Shawna, he was involved with an investigation of top-level officers who were taking money from the members' pension fund and moving it to other parts of the budget. He saw how our government in Ottawa works, and because he is such a principled person and because he was treated so badly trying to be "an honest cop," he's getting out.

  15. Thats too bad for him leaving his career but at least this shows us there is still some honest police out there and this teaches us how corrupt the police force can be. Although I've heard of police officers doing a lot worse things than the "officers who were taking money from the members' pension fund and moving it to other parts of the budget"

  16. I agree with Zach and bogey as well. "To Serve and Protect". The Police may seem to be "out to get you" or "hunt you down", but overall they maintain our safety and mingle with every criminals bad decision. To be honest, I was caught stealing from a dollar store fairly young by an "Undercover Citizen" and was told to come to the back of the store. When the police came, They had a big breath of understanding words that changed my view towards stealing and overall being a criminal. I guess what i'm trying to say is that once you come in contact with them, your image of them being the "bad guy" starts to fade.

  17. I think that the police are there just to entrap you in the novel 1984. The don't seem to protecting the people in the lower class from anything but there true thoughts towards the government. The police seem to just be there to help the powerful stay powerful and stop the outer party from realizing this and rebelling by any means necessary.
