English 12: Monday 26 March

Today we began our new unit on poetry.  To begin the class I asked students to please post a comment to tell me what poetry IS to you.  We then looked at the Grade 11 anthology to see what some poets said when asked the same question.  Thank you to the small number who attended - your participation in the discussion was appreciated.  There is no homework except to comment on this post.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR IMPRINTS 11 TEXT TO CLASS FOR THE NEXT LITTLE WHILE.

  1. Poetry to me is a way you can express feeling, sometimes when your upset or having a good day words seems to flow and its easy for some people to get out what's on their minds by wrighting it down. It sometimes can be a good way to rhyme and express emotion.

  3. Poetry to me is a sign of expression. You get the chance to write about something that bothers you but have it so that it's not completely what's wrong. Anybody can write about their feelings but some prefer to express them in a way that they rhyme.

  4. Poetry is a type of language which usually has many layers and is often metaphoric. We generally think of poetry as writing that is very emotional and heartfelt, such as love poems. Poetry is also used to break down simple situations in to our emotions and senses. The figurative language we have learned throughout school, alliteration and similes, are regular yet effective in poetry. Although I struggle with it, I ultimately enjoy poetry.

  5. What IS Poetry to me, for starters it isn't something that really stands out, difficulty wise i guess it does like a passing of a heart attack, hmm one sounds good right about now.

  6. Poetry to me is a different way of communicating your feelings. Poems can be interpreted according to someone's personal experiences. When i read poetry, I like to try to relate to the piece of writing.

  7. Poetry to me is a way of expressing emotion, with endless amounts of options and much diversity. It may come from personal experiences or feelings, and may not even be understandable to the readers. I only really enjoy reading poetry if I can somehow relate to it, and I do not enjoy writing it.

  8. To me, poems express feeling and emotion whether for entertainment or even just sending a message. I myself am not not a fan of poetry but i understand why it is an important unit.

  9. Poetry is full of big masterfully organized words. It is to be interpreted by the nerds. If we know how to utilize it, it is a sparkling gem.

  10. I appreciate the effort of those of you who have shared their responses so far. It was interesting to read how many of you connected to the ideas of emotion or feeling and I also noticed how some of your comments were poetic themselves. Ben, YOU are a sparkling gem.

  11. Poetry to me is a way to express something in a way that makes it special to you or someone you wrote it for. I would live to be able to write poetry more often as when I do I feel like it relieves stress.

  12. Honestly, poetry is very bland to me. I find that even when I read some of the most famous poems in the world, I cannot gain interest. I hope that this unit will help me, to enjoy poetry more than before.

  13. Poetry to me, is a set of perfectly jumbled up words, that go together so precisely. The speaker expresses feelings about the writer. However, it's not always physical. Sometimes you need to think about what's underneath those words, not so concrete. There's more meaning than to what's being said. It may leave you mind boggled, but that's just what the speaker is going for.

  14. Poetry to me doesn't make a lot of sense 100% of the time. Even when I'm reading poetry, and I know it's good poetry, I find it hard to see the big picture of it all. There are only some poems that I understand completely and can picture exactly what the speaker is talking about, but most of the time it just doesn't make sense. I hope my perception changes in this unit.

  15. Poetry doesn't make sense to me, I enjoy hearing it, but I can never see a deeper meaning or what the writer or narrator is talking about. I also have a hard time figuring out what the poem is, or what it was writen in.

  16. I believe poetry is a language spoken by the heart, and that its here to assist in expression of what the "beholder" feels or wants to express, which also leads me to believe that's what makes the theme or moral of the poem sometimes so complicated to comprehend unless you already know exactly how the author is feeling...
