Please have Chapter 8 of Part Two read prior to Monday's class. Also, please add a comment to this post. It can be a reflection, prediction, reaction, or what have you. Enjoy your weekend.
I find that the novel has began to pick up in pace. Im really getting into the book and finding the unpredictablity enchanting. Usually when reading novels you have a general idea on how the book will turn out but in this case here are endless possibilities. This, for me, is really interesting. I find myself not even wondering what will happen next or trying to figure it out. Im completely content having the book take me on a mental journey with no preconceived ideas on the future. Im very intrigued to read the future chapters. I want to read the whole book tonight, but considering the depth of the book i think itd put me at a disadvantage. I realize that i have put anything down about the specific happenings of the book, i just htought this was more prevelent for me and i may post later on in response to others.
At the beginning of the novel I found myself very confused concerning the language of the book. Although as I began reading further, the book became more understandable. I find this book is very imaginative and unpredictable. The twist and turns that happen within this book are endless. Some readers may find this book hard to comprehend, but I find it as a refreshing new take at a writing stance. I found the biggest twist to happen so far was Winston finding out the specious "Dark Haired" woman, Julia was really in love with him. I believe this twist enticed us as readers to dive deeper into the true meaning of the book. I'm excited to finish this book, and to finally figure out what the author has in store for us.
I agree with both Becki and Shelby, the twist and turns that occur and re-occur really keeps my attention. In the beginning of the book the writing was a little harder to read, but that is what I liked about the book. As the writing became easier to read I found myself not interested, however that was my feelings before the "twists and turns". Now the reading just captures your eyes and to stop reading takes a lot of effort. I found myself waking up this morning at 4:30ish and starting to read. George Orwell has produced and amazing novel that I would once read again and again. I am quite excited to see what the end will be and how it shall effect each of us.
I found the beginning slow and it was hard to get into. Now the book is enjoyable and pulls me in. Chapter 8 was the best so far it really gets the book moving. I have a feeling something big is about to happen in it.
I agree with Becky, the book has really picked up in pace and is a lot more interesting. Earlier in the book it was a struggle to get through the chapters because it did not interest me. Reading the past three chapters were very interesting, although I am still unsure if Winston's feelings are real for Julia. Before she had given him the note he hated her, he wanted to kill her.To betray her is to allow "them" to make his feels for her change, if they are as he says they are. So now that she says she loves him he believes that he loves her and would practically die to be with her. I agree with Becky, Shelby and Travis how the twists that continue to come keep us wanting to know more.
Reading these few chapters over the weekend came easy to me. I happen to disagree with Becky, Shelby and Travis because I find this novel quite predictable. I was awaiting Winston to have more contact with O'Brien and the fact that Winston was even more selfish than he first showed was bound to happen. I found Julia very dense and that surprised me a bit. I also find myself predicting future happenings, not intentionally but only because of the sheer predictability of 1984. However, I may be wrong in my predictions. I am enjoying 1984 even though it may have an air of predictability.
From the previous comments i also agree that the twists and turns are making this more interesting for me. At first i really didn't like 1984 but now as i read more it's starting to grow on me. I like the foreshadowing in Winston's dreams so you have an idea of what might happen next. I'm interested to see who's side O'Brien is on.
I must say I enjoy the parallels I can paint between this book and many other works of fiction I enjoy. I find it quite interesting how many of the twists and events that the previous posters have talked about are often recognizable in other works. Perhaps this is a testament to the power of George Orwell's statement, or maybe these ideas are pervasive enough to be independently arrived at by people across several cultures. I believe I can honestly say that almost every significant turn of events I have read in this book, I have seen in other media, most of them produced after the writing of this book, and most of them implented well, and in subtly different ways. I think it could be quite possible that George Orwell, like Winston Smith was simply finally writing down what others for many years may have been fleetingly imagining.
In the last few chapters of 1984 a lot has happened in the story. Unlike before where the story was moving pretty slow, part 2 is very interesting. It is moving a lot quicker, which makes its easier to follow and read. I agree with becky that at this point there is no way to know how this book will end. There are so many possibilities. There are still a lot of aspects of this society that we do not know about yet. Anything could happen. Im excited to find out how the story progresses from here.
In response to Jones, I definitely agree that Julia's unique form of apathy somewhat surprised me, as did the fact that even considering this she was willing to do almost whatever the Brotherhood asked of her.
The Start of the book was very confusing but has gotten easier to understand. The Story is starting to make sense and is getting much more interesting. More people are getting introduced and it makes for a more exciting book. Overall I am enjoying the book more as It goes on.
This part of the book really draws in more of your attention, with Julia, and their little room, O'Brian and the Brotherhood, its becoming a "now-what-are-they-going-to-do??" book. Id like to add to the "dark haired" woman as shelby mentioned, and how julia is the complete opposite of how Winston had perceived her. Unlike O'Brian where he was Winstons hope, and a possible a connection to the brotherhood, or simply another person like himself. Plus the constant forshadowing with O'Brian, it was bound to happen it already had been predicted.
Becky stole the words right out of my mouth, or well fingers I suppose in this case. I too have found the novel to have picked up in pace over the last few chapters. Like Shelby I found that the larger presence of Julia now in the novel to be exciting, however not a surprise. I predicted that Winston and Julia would become romantically involved because of the effort the author put into mentioning her. When we first began reading this novel the content driven style was hard to follow and stay interested in, now however I have found the plot playing a bigger role and my interest has risen significantly. I believe that because the beginning of the novel was so content focused it has allowed for the plot to now occur in such an exciting way. I look forward to reading on and discussing the novel in class.
By joining this class two weeks late i find myself very far behind and clueless to what everyone is talking about on here. I realize that i will have to spend the majority of my free time reading to catch up with everyone else in the class and i am not looking forward to it. Despite my dread of the countless hours I will probably take catching up, I am looking forward to the whole blog thing. I think its pretty cool and it doesn't take half as long as a journal entry so i'm stoked on that.
When the book was first handed out I was really excited to read it. I've always been interested in anything around the time of the second world war and when I found out that this was written in this time I was eager to start reading. In beginning It was kind slow but it still was interesting, I would think farther then it would explain and wonder how it really was. Now that we are farther the book is going in a much faster pace but it is still in the same style of writing so now that I have some of the story already read I can go through it much faster without having to think about what is really going on.
This has got to be one of, if not the most entertaining or interesting books I have ever read. And like Becky I found it hard to stop from reading the next chapter. It's OK that the book picked up its pace, but to be honest I like it just as much without the twists and turns. Maybe I just like to see impossibilities painted on top of a post war Earth.
These few chapters, for some reason, have held my attention less than previous chapters. As Becky and some others said, there are some twists but it still just feels like the plot is still building, and not really taking off yet. However, the contact with O'Brien was an exciting event but as Mitch said, this was predictable right from the beginning of the book. That being said I'm finding myself unsure as to what is going to happen next and I'm excited for the chapters to come.
