Dear students,
I guess this is the end of Mr. Marshall's Pender Blog for the time being. As I post this, nearly 18,000 views would suggest it has been a useful endeavor. I would like to thank you for your part in what has been for me, a wonderful past number of years. We have had our ups and downs and been affected by stressors from within and without our school, but through it all, we have managed. I like to think that a big reason for that is the family atmosphere that we have. Yes, our school is small and no, it doesn't offer the broad selection of courses and activities that a larger school can, but we do feel connected and cared-for. I have always tried to foster a sense of academic and personal responsibility for you, without neglecting the need for laughs. I have tried to adapt our classroom to follow what I see as best practices and that has meant the need for flexibility on your part. I like to think that we have fostered a relationship of mutual trust and respect and the result has been the creation of what I hope you will agree has been a desirable place to be. In school, we often talk about how teachers help students, but I want to acknowledge that you have helped me. There is no doubt that I leave Pender a better teacher than I arrived and I wish to thank you for supporting my pursuits both inside and outside of Room 102.
I'll be thinking of you...

Today, we looked at the list of literary devices we need to know in order to work effectively with poetry. We identified and defined them. Then we looked at the poem "The Shark" (on p 280 of the anthology) and worked at identifying devices within an actual piece of poetry. Please complete that examination for homework. We have ten classes until the provincial exam.
We will work on the "Blue and White" symbolism paragraphs tomorrow.

Today we read and discussed the short story "Blue Against White" (p.92 of anthology). We looked at the poem "I Grew Up" from p.175 of the Eng 12 text, and examined how we could compare and contrast it to the story. Finally, I assigned a short paragraph to allow students to write about the symbolism in the story. Please see the notes sheet.Monday, January 10, 2011

En10: Notes from Thurs 6 Jan
Today, we discussed the idea of theme (using the short story "The Sniper"). We practiced taking theme statements and turning them into topic sentences. We recognized that on the provincial exam we will have to make connections between two texts that will have some sort of thematic link. We also reexamined how to find good supporting quotations and we discussed the importance of using powerful verbs (in our quotations and our own writing).
Finally, we wrote a half-page report, in the persona of the sniper to his officer, reporting on the events described in the story. Please have that ready for tomorrow's class.

We'll watch the rest of the documentary tomorrow. Then we will get ready to write.

En 10: Notes from Tuesday, 7 Dec
Today, we filled out the writing logs with the St. Crispin's speech paragraph information. Next, we divided into two troupes and chose parts to perform a 15-minute version of the play. We then read through the play a few times and practiced our parts. Finally, we watched the first ten minutes of a five part documentary on the real battle at Agincourt. The information from the documentary will help us write our next piece that is focused on Henry V's leadership. This is designed to allow us to practice blending information from multiple sources - something you will be doing on your provincial exam, only 25 classes from now.
Few of you are posting comments to the blog after your Shakespeare classes - this will lower your unit mark since the blog is filling the role of a journal.
