Today we were introduced to George Orwell's 1984. We discussed Orwell's biography and read the novels' introductory passage: it outlines a very odd and challenging setting. We are writing expository paragraphs on the setting (one page, due tomorrow) as a way to give Mr. Marshall a writing sample.
We also decided to read about 25 pages a day until the novel is read. That will take us a little over two weeks. Please stick to the schedule so you don't get behind. Book One is a little slower than Book Two, but the author has to take time to get everything set up for you.
I hope you enjoy the story!
I think Mr.Marshall is boss!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand "Hate Week" what exactly are they hating? Something specific or anything?
ReplyDeleteWhy do the Police allow that space in his apartment that they can't see him? Don't they realize it?
ReplyDeleteI think the first two chapters in 1984 were very dark and depressing. The two minutes of hate was very interesting and scary.
ReplyDeleteThey are hating "Goldstein", Breanna. A rebel, I believe.
ReplyDelete1984 is filled with interest..!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso they said there are no laws, yet if you think of something you're not supposed to think of, they will take you away.
ReplyDeleteI agree Zack the two minutes of hate were brutal im confused at how one second winston is against Big brother then the next he is all for yelling at the telescreen with bottles of anger.
ReplyDeleteI agree Zack. The first two chapters were indeed quite dark and depressing.
ReplyDeleteHe got caught up in the moment.
ReplyDeleteI agree dylan, Winston is very two faced..
ReplyDeleteThe book 1984 is an amazing and imaginative book. It may be on the slow side in the beginning but it really picks up in book two. As the character Winston develops i understand that he does not truly fit in to his society and dreams of his own personal space to be himself, without the thought police. The author uses a lot of imagery so as to paint a picture of what it looks like there in our minds. The book gets better as time goes on.
ReplyDeletethe only thing about getting caught in the moment is he knew the whole time that he was going against his beliefs but still got angry.
ReplyDeleteLiving in that kind of society would be frightening. Having a "telescreen" listening and watching your every move. Winston Smith is lucky his "telescreen" was put in an awkward spot, leaving him a little space to hid.
ReplyDeleteThe book is pretty easy to follow difficult words but they can easily be interpreted. There is one thing that I find confusing, this would be when he starts explaining the parties. I would enjoy some clarification, help!
Breanna.. the Police can do pretty much whatever they want it seems.
ReplyDeleteThe "Hidden Space" in Winstons' room isn't detectable, By sight, although they may still be able to hear Smith while he is in this space, but haven't noticed yet, this could show that Big Brother isn't quite, "Always Watching"
ReplyDeletemy first thought of the book was that i might have read the book before however i think that reading the book will make me under stand a bit better. I find the plot to be vary gray at first win i read that winston lives in a stench filled apartment.
