En 11 Reading for Thursday, 9 Sept.

Thanks for being receptive and willing to participate in our first TOMATS lesson - I promise not to talk so much next time.  The novel is very much about Santiago and in addition to responding to the study guide focus questions, try to continuously ask yourself "Who is this guy, Santiago? What makes him tick?"  Expect routine reading quizzes so I can gauge the level of your understanding.  Please be read up to page 41 for Thursday (including the appropriate study responses).

  1. I don't find this book interesting. when I first started to read the first part of the book "The Old Man And The Sea" it was slow and it seems that the author took his time to get to the point, but also wrote lots about the old mans personality as well as where he has been in his life growing up.

  2. My impression for the start of the book was that, I found the first few pages was un intresting and slow, but now that I read more into the book its starting to to get a bit better but not by much.

  3. I thought that the book is starting out pretty slow and seems to drag on the waiting... it is sorta interesting waiting but I hope it gets a little more exiting. I have seen the movie so I sorta know what happens.

  5. I think that this novel was not very exciting but i think that the characters in this story have a reality to them that is adding a true story. Santiago is a very brave man but I think that in the end he was stubborn for not taking the boys help.

  6. My first impression was that i thought it was kinda weird? And that i don't really like it. But i still want to know what is coming next? ...i only read the first 25 pages... missing the first day of school wasn't such a good idea. :)

  7. The book isn't too bad, I guess. I like how Santiago is an old, wise person. I don't like the way Santiago and Manolin talk to each other. The way they talk is just annoying.

  8. So far I think this book is pretty interesting considering its all about a man on a boat the size of my bed in the middle of the ocean. I actually found my self reading farther when I was supposed which is a surprise for I'm not a huge reader. Jake smells.

  9. This book isn't really the type of book I enjoy to read, I kinda thinks its a little boring. The story is too simple for my liking, I like to read stuff with some meat in it =P Maybe if I read more of it I will understand maybe why it was the book Hemingway got the Noble Prize...

  11. My first thought of this novel is that it was a little slow. I didn't understand a lot of what it was talking about, but after reading more it became a little more interesting. :D-{--<

  12. The book is interesting, the fact that he he fishes with his bare hands, no rods or anything is pretty cool. Also the fact that his house it made of leaves.

  13. My first impression of the novel is that it's slow moving, I found the communication between Santiago and the boy very dry, It's difficult to really get into the story. I'm sure as I keep reading it will become more interesting.

  18. My first impression of the novel is that it isn't very interesting to me. It isn't the type of story that I would read usually. Hopefully as I progress in the novel, I will become more engaged in it.

  19. I find the man very interesting with lot's of confidence though it staggers sometimes. He knows he is strong and able; no matter what other fishermen may think of him. I enjoy reading the novel and I am very interested. It has definitely pulled me in and I'm looking forward to read about what is to come.

  20. My first impression was that the book was very uninteresting. There is too much detail about small things that aren't that important, but now it is starting to pick up a little bit and doesn't seem so boring =)

  21. I think the book is interesting. I find the dialogue a little bit confusing.

  22. This book is not the genre of book I typically would read. But it seems like it my pick up into a book that I won't be able to put down! I agree with Mike that the characters have a reality to them, which adds depth to the story.

  23. At first I thought the book was slow and boring, it didn't really grab my attention. As I got into the book a little more it became more exciting, and I didn't want to put it down.

  24. I find this book to be a little simplistic, but quite engaging. I have read past what we were supposed to read for homework, and I found the pace of the book increased to the point where it became a good story. @T-Rent Ched, fish scare me on occasion too.
    @PHohn-read this.

  25. I find this book some what sad because of the way his house gets described. I am not very interested in this book but hope to get interested as i read. i think the author drags on some parts of the story a little to long and that is what looses me.

  26. My first impression of the novel was that it was indeed slow, but still interesting to read. And i can see how some people find the way Santiago and Manolin speak to each other dry or lacking but i think that perhaps it is only that way on the surface. Considering the fact that they are pretending to have a life they no longer have means something a lot more than just them talking... The novel has created a vivid image in my mind which I like but i am looking forward to when the book comes to the climax. :)

  27. I actually enjoy the book. I liked the beginning, the author is very descriptive and it creates a strong mental image in my head . I really like reading about Manolin and Santiago's relationship too.

  28. I found this book to first strike me as wanting to be a little too descriptive and to lack in character building. I find that I'm getting annoyed with having the fish on the line pulling the old man around for the past 5 pages now and either want the fish to get away, get pulled up or die already and I find myself skipping pages just to get it over with. On the other hand i find his way of describing this peaceful and good for the imagination.

  29. To be honest my first impression of the book was that it was slowly paced but I still kept my interest to give it a chance and it's actually starting to pick up. And I like the point that Aisha made about their communication being very dry and that doesn't help when your trying to get into the book.
